Description
Thorp (/θɔrp/, US dict: thawrp) is an unincorporated town and census-designated place (CDP) in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 240 at the 2010 census. The surrounding area (ZIP Code Tabulated Area) had a population of 695 as of the 2010 census.
The town of Thorp is 99.36 miles east of Seattle, Washington, 9.29 miles northwest of Ellensburg, and 15.21 miles southeast of Cle Elum (/kliː-ˈɛl.ʌm/, US dict: klee-EL'-uhm). It is located at the picturesque narrow west end of the Kittitas Valley (/ˈkɪt.ɨ.ts/, US dict: KIT'-i-tas) where high elevation timber lands of the Cascade Range, with mountain lakes and vacation homes, give way to horse country and cattle ranches surrounded by rich, irrigated farmlands noted for Timothy hay, alfalfa, vegetables, fruit, and forage production.
Reachable via Exit 101 (Thorp, Thorp Highway) on Interstate 90, Thorp can also be accessed from State Route 10 (formerly U.S. Route 10) via the Thorp Highway at milepost 8.98.
Thorp is named for Fielden Mortimer Thorp, recognized as the first permanent white settler in the Kittitas Valley. He established a homestead at the approach to Taneum Canyon (/ˈteɪn.əm/, US dict: TAYN'-uhm) near the present-day town of Thorp in 1868. Klla, an ancient Native American village and the largest indigenous settlement in the Kittitas Valley at the arrival of the first white settlers, was located about one mile above the current town site.
The main line of the Northern Pacific Railroad used to run through the town of Thorp, and it was considered an important shipping point at one time. Currently the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe uses the rail line through the town, but the train no longer makes stops.
